Actions, Activities, Homework and Assignments

  • Review the Mendelian Genetics  unit organizer, including the mastery objectives and critical skills and the vocabulary for this unit.

  • Listen and take notes on the Mendelian Genetics Lecture.

  • Watch and take notes on the Mendelian Genetics video.  Then answer the guiding questions to the right to check your understanding.

  • Practice solving Mendelian Genetics problems.

  • Explore  the use of biotechnology in understanding sickle cell anemia.

  • Towards the end of the unit, complete the associated worksheet  that appears on the wiki page below to check your understanding of the material.

 1. Before we begin this unit you will receive the Mendelian Genetics Unit Organizer.  Remember the unit organizer contains the mastery objects for the unit, the scientific vocabulary terms used in the unit, the suggested reading, some of the in class activities and a series of questions, some of which will be assigned as homework or classwork. Keep the unit organizer at the front of this unit's written work as a way to keep your notes in order. If you lose it or need another copy, the electronic file is linked here.  Simply click on the link and download the file.

 2. Listen and take notes on the Mendelian Genetics lecture. A digital file of the lecture is available here and you will also get a hard copy in class.

3. Now that you have the necessary background, it's time to learn more about yourself. Here is a list of human traits.  You can determine your phenotypes and try to guess your genotypes.  Hand on to this table, you will use it later in the genetics unit.

4. Here are a number of simple genetics problems.  We will do some in class and you can do as many of the remaining ones as you need to master this type of problem.

5.  Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease that arises from a single mutation in one's DNA. We study it because its cause is simple to understand and its genetics are easy to predict.

In the crooked cell lab we practice micropipetting, an important biotech skill, and we run electrophoresis gels, another important biotech skill.  The lab and a variety of support documents are included here and will be reviewed and done in class.
