Actions, Activities, Homework and Assignments

  • Review the Transcription Translation unit organizer, including the mastery objectives and critical skills and the vocabulary for this unit.

  • Listen and take notes on the Transcription Translation Lecture.

  • Watch and take notes on the Transcription and Translation videos.  Then answer the guiding questions to the right to check your understanding.

  • With a partner, complete the Transcription Translation Lab.
  • Listen to the Mutation lecture and then test your understanding by doing the associated problems.

  • Towards the end of the unit, answer the Guiding Questions that appear on the wiki page below.

 1. Before we begin this unit you will receive the Transcription Translation Unit Organizer.  Remember the unit organizer contains the mastery objects for the unit, the scientific vocabulary terms used in the unit, the suggested reading, some of the in class activities and a series of questions, some of which will be assigned as homework or classwork. Keep the unit organizer at the front of this unit's written work as a way to keep your notes in order. If you lose it or need another copy, the electronic file is linked here.  Simply click on the link and download the file.

3. Watch the video from the amoeba sisters to get a good overview of the process of protein synthesis (aka transcription - translation).

Guiding Questions

1.  What is transcription?

2. Where does it take place?

3. What is translation?

4. Where does it take place?

5. What is a codon? Where is it?

6. How does DNA three letter code get converted into an amino acid?

4. Working with a partner, complete the transcription translation lab.  All of the materials will be provided in class. In this lab you transcribe and translate genetic sequences to determine which dog's DNA you have received.

5. Let's talk about mutations again, this time from a knowledge of the nucleotide bases in the DNA. Listen and take notes on the Mutation Slides which are part of the earlier power point presentation.

6. Practice mutation classification by doing the following problems.

7. Check your understanding of this unit by answering the guiding questions below.

  1. What is the process of transcription?

  2. Where does transcription take place?

  3. What types of molecules are involved in transcription?

  4. What is the process of translation?

  5. Where does translation take place?

  6. What types of molecules are involved in translation?

  7. List the nucleotide bases and which match up with each other.

  8. What is a codon and where is it found?

  9. What is an anticodon and where is it found?

10. What is a frameshift mutation and why is it important?

11. What is the difference between an insertion and a deletion? Are these always bad?
